Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's advisor on strategic communications. In her role as the White House's Strategic Communications Advisor, Mercedes Schlapp faces a myriad of issues. A president can be his own director of communications. There are numerous legal matters that may affect messaging strategies. And Cabinet Secretaries who have been involved in controversy. Schlapp has kept her focus all the time, working closely with White House policy and political teams, as well as shop owners and the legislative affairs department. Her focus to date has been on topics such as safety in schools, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade as well as other topics. As a current employee she isn't in contact with many reporters. In March, she was the subject of a sudden surge in attention, when it became known that her name would be considered a possible candidate to replace Hope Hicks as the director of communication. Mercedes Schlapp's position as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy task. Mercedes Schlapp must deal with an administration beset by numerous problems, such as a president who is acting as the president's own communications director and Cabinet Secretaries involved in controversies of their own. Schlapp did not change her mission, and has collaborated closely with White House policy and political teams. So far, her focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. She doesn't interact with reporters often in her current job. There was a great deal of media attention when she was named as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks, the communications director. It hasn't been a pleasant fight. Schlapp's allies fought with Tony Sayegh on the news. When the Washington Examiner published a negative story about Sayegh, Schlapp said she called him to have a heart to heart.
